Have you ever gotten stuck in the anguishing monotony of life? Hopefully I’m not the only one! This world is a nest of troubles. As Sri Krishna says in the Bhagavad Gita, “O Arjuna, get away from My ocean of suffering and misery!”

Though, at the same time, Paramhansa Yogananda counseled his disciples to “Enjoy the world with the Joy of God.” And that the purpose of this life is “for our education and entertainment.” He added onto that statement saying, “But how few are either educated or entertained!”

The Path of Kriya Yoga is the “Golden Middle Path,” as stated by the great master Babaji, and a path of moderation, not severity or extremes. Yet, I would venture a guess that many of us are quite hard on ourselves. We can become so austere that we altogether forget about this world being anything other than a testing ground, for which if we fail, will mean our eternal spiritual doom.

Swami Kriyananda once asked Yoganandaji, “Am I not trying hard enough?” His response might surprise you. He said, “You are trying too hard. It is creating tension.” All work and no play makes us dull boys and girls. Remember that God is Joy! We must bring some lightness of being into our daily lives. Otherwise, the willpower we put out to practice healthy self-control can become sapped and lose its potency.

The Science of Fun states:

  • We are much more efficient at our daily duties when we are having fun
  • We have a higher quality of life when we play
  • Relationships are more harmonious when they include having fun together

To practice the Art of Fun:

  • Take time daily to do something that brings you joy
  • Laugh daily and often
  • Go on a vacation just for the fun of it
